Our primary fishing destination is Shady Camp, located on the Mary River. Shady Camp is easily accessible by road and there are also light aircraft and helicopter runways nearby.
If you are travelling from interstate or overseas, making your way to Shady Camp from the Darwin Airport will take approximately 2.5 hours by road.
A helicopter from Darwin Airport will take approximately 1 hour, with a short road commute on arrival and light aircraft approximately 0.5 hours, again with a short road commute. We utilise the Wildman Wilderness Lodge Runway for air transfers.
Getting to Shady Camp on your own is easy and the roads in Darwin are smooth and well maintained. Unlike the hustle and bustle of the bigger cities in Australia, Darwin and the Northern Territory is renowned for its lack of cars on the main roads and once you get outside the city, you will be lucky to see one unless its holiday season.
This is why self-driving is the perfect solution even for visitors.
Visitors to the NT can find useful information on the Tourism NT Website, where they provide a FREE handy booklet and map to help you get around.
If you are an international guest and require information about licensing, check out the AANT website. In Australia, we drive on the right side of the vehicle.
If you are flying into Darwin, there are a number of hire car companies at the Domestic/International Airport. To check pricing and to book a car, we recommend the VroomVroomVroom website, which lists all the hire car companies and their fees.

When self-driving from Darwin to Shady Camp, there are 2 petrol stations on the Arnhem Highway. The first is Corroboree Park Tavern and the second The Bark Hut Inn (due to open Dec 2019). If driving from Jabiru, we recommend refuelling before leaving as the closest petrol station is Corroboree Park Tavern. There are no petrol or store facilities at Shady Camp.
